Profile

Charles MacDougall was born in London in 1982 and received his early musical training in musical theatre and as a pianist. He read Classics at Durham and was awarded an MA with Distinction in 2005. During that time he held a choral scholarship at University College and also sang with the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir and the International Centre for Music Studies New Vocal Consort (dir. Richard Wistreich).

Charles is currently a member of the international multi award-winning vocal ensemble Voces8, Scotland’s premier vocal ensemble Cappella Nova, the chamber choirs Voces Cantabiles and Edinburgh Camerata, and The Choir of St. Simon Zelotes, Chelsea.

Charles is much in demand as a performance coach working chiefly as principal vocal coach to both the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir and the Voces Cantabiles Youth Choir, and as visiting vocal coach to a number of choral and theatrical institutions across the United Kingdom. In May 2006 Charles was awarded the position of Emerging Artist by InterOpera, producing Bizet's Carmen under the baton of Alistair Dawes, working alongside soloists from ENO, WNO and Covent Garden.

An AHRC award (August 2006) has enabled Charles to continue his research into the adaptation of Greek epic for operatic performance. Charles currently continues his vocal studies with international vocal coach Hilary Llystyn Jones and has been mentored by noted opera director Elijah Moshinsky.

Charles' solo work has included Handel's Messiah on tour of Lombardy, Italy with the Gruppo Corale e Strumentale Jubilate, at the London Foundling Museum and St. Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, with the Emerald Ensemble (recorded for Channel 4); Monteverdi's madrigals with Trio Barokkalao in the Newcastle Early Music Festival; Mozart's Spatzen-Messe with Northern Sinfonia and Charpentier's Te Deum with the Bishop's Consort.
